NEA: Audience Research - Online Survey Feedback
After conducting my online survey I collected all the feedback and input the information that could be measured into pie charts to show the clear data collected.
Q1) What's your age?
The feedback from this first question notifies me of
the age range I have collected information from. Looking at the chart above the
clear age of the majority of participates were 15, followed by 16 years of age.
From this I can see that most of the answers I get are from the age group of my
desired audience (14 -18 years old). There is also a small minority of 14 and
17 years old whom are also within my target age group. One downside of this is
that I don't get a variety of ages meaning I can't see if older ages of my
audience would have clear differing views from the younger side. Gaining 15/16
year old feedback is around the median of the age group, which can compensate
for the lack of a wide age range.
Q2) What's your gender?
From this the obvious majority was
expected to be females because of the ratio to whom the survey was sent to,
this is a downside as I wanted to be able to gain an equal comparison between
genders but I can still view both side of feedback.
Q3) What is your favourite music
genre/s?
R&B/Hip Hop was the most
preferred genre of music amongst the participants. This has given me an insight
into what king of magazine I can produce which will attract my target audience.
Grime/Drill and Pop followed closely after, telling me that these three
preferences are most likely to be the main genres listened to by my overall
target audience. This will therefore shape not only my magazine layout, colour
scheme and coverlines but also my artist and what genre he/she are associated
with.
Q4) Do you think your preference in
music is popular amongst your peers?
The responses from this question
were beneficial because it gave me a better understanding of how popular music
vary amongst friendship groups. Most of the apparent popular music amongst
peers came from the three previously mentioned genres, mainly R&B/Hip Hop,
but there were a few responses from Soul and K-pop that were believed to also
be popular amongst their peers.
Q5) Who are some of your favourite
artists at the moment?
This question gained a large variety
of responses. The most occurring artists that were mentioned were J.Cole, Dave,
Xxxtentacion, Skengdo, Rihanna and Khalid. Most of these artists come from the
genre of Hip Hop, Grime/Drill. This tells me the sort of artists my audience
appreciate, I can therefore include their style of work and/or start to venture
more into how they are presented in their genre. There were however a lot more
artists with a larger variety of genres.
This included SZA, Jorja Smith Kehalni, AM,
Drake, Halsey, Maroon 5, Selena Gomez, A$ap Rocky, Ariana Grande, BTS, Eminem,
Harlem Spartans, The 1975, Nirvana, Ramz, Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator,
Skepta, Hardy Caprio, Fredo, Sneakbo, Cardi B, Not3s and many more.
This gives me an overall idea of
artists popular amongst my target audience, even though I will probably only be
able to concentrate on the majority.
Q6) Why did you chose this artist/s?
Some of the responses to this
question included appreciation for their meaningful lyricism, unique
voices, style, beats and personality. This information will notify me
on what I need to concentrate on when producing my artist. As well as help me
create coverlines based on the previous artists, including the
features that my audience admire.
Q7) Have you heard of any music
magazines, if so name them?
The majority of my participants
heard of music magazines which are listed above but nearly half of my
audience had not heard of any magazine brands. This will allow me to look into
magazines that my audience are familiar with, viewing if I could pick out genre
conventions that I should consider to attract readers. Otherwise, in terms of
those who haven't read or heard of any music magazines I could create a product
that may be more suitable to them.
The most popular magazine was the J. Cole
Billboard magazine, followed by the Khalid B&S cover. From this I can infer
that my audience may instantly concentrate on the artist as Hip Hop was also
found to be popular amongst my target audience and J.Cole is a prominent Hip
Hop figure. This could also tell me that my audience are attracted to unique
looking magazines as this cover has a distinguishable lighting and colour
scheme. The rest of the magazines, which also got positive responses, tells me
other features I could concentrate on.
Q9) Why did you choose this specific magazine?
This question was description based meaning
participants could not choose a choice but rather describe in their own words.
Despite this these were the most recurring answer. The majority of respondents
chose the magazine based on the artists. Knowing this will cause me to focus on
my artist when laying out my cover and to establish his/her persona. I could
also include a clear anchor to promote the musician. My audience also
appreciate colour schemes and layouts. Looking at the responses I can see that
most of the comments on colour scheme were because of the J.Cole cover and
Camilla Cabello cover. Participants appreciated the colours and lighting used,
especially the simple layout of the Camilla Cabello magazine.
Q10) What features of a
magazine would interest you the most?
This final question clearly showed me which aspects of a magazine
interests my audience the most and should therefore be emphasised in my
product. The artists featured will need to be an important part of my magazine
in addition to the colour scheme, genre conventions and articles.
